CORYDORAS HABROSUS - CORYDORAS HABROSUS | Live Freshwater Fish
Dwarf Corydoras (Corydoras habrosus)
A tiny, peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish that shines in community tanks and nano setups. Despite their small size, they are highly active, constantly exploring the sand and driftwood while staying away from stronger currents. They’re an ideal addition for hobbyists who want a lively, naturalistic aquarium scene without introducing aggressive tank mates.
Key benefits
- Compact size makes them perfect for 10–20 gallon tanks and planted setups
- Active schooling behavior adds dynamic motion to the substrate level
- Efficient scavengers that help consume leftover foods and biofilm at the bottom
- Peaceful companions suitable for a diverse, peaceful community
Care and setup
- Substrate: fine sand or smooth gravel to protect delicate barbels
- Tank size: minimum 10 gallons for a small group; 20 gallons or more recommended for robust schooling
- Water parameters: pH 6.0–7.5; temperature 22–26°C (72–79°F); hardness 2–12 dGH
- Filtration: gentle flow that doesn’t create strong currents around the tank bottom
- Decor: plenty of plants, driftwood, and caves to provide hiding spots and exploration opportunities
Diet and feeding
They are omnivorous bottom-dwellers. Offer a varied diet of sinking micro pellets or wafers, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp. Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily, ensuring any uneaten food is removed to maintain water quality. They will also graze on biofilm and leftover scraps between meals, contributing to a cleaner substrate.
Behavior and social needs
Best kept in groups of 4–6 individuals to maximize safety and activity. In a well-planted, peaceful community, they establish a relaxed, social demeanor and actively patrol the substrate together. They are not risk-takers and will stay mostly out of the way of larger or more aggressive tank mates, making them a reliable choice for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike.
Breeding and reproduction
Breeding is achievable in a mature, well-maintained tank with stable water conditions and a gentle environment. Corydoras habrosus lay adhesive eggs on plants or tank decor; eggs typically hatch in about 3–4 days at warmer temperatures. Parent fish may eat eggs if kept with adults, so many hobbyists separate breeders or provide egg-targeted spawning surfaces. Fry are very small and begin life feeding on infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow.
