The Bronze Featherback Knife Fish (Notopterus notopterus) is a striking, graceful centerpiece for large freshwater tanks. Natural habitat

Mid- to upper-water swimmer in large freshwater systems. Origin: Colombia / South America. In the home aquarium, it thrives best in a well-structured environment with ample swimming space and subdued lighting that keeps stress low while highlighting its flowing silhouette.

Adult size

Up to 16–18 inches in captivity.

Temperament

Semi-aggressive by nature; generally peaceful but can be territorial. It may prey on very small fish if kept with overly small or fast-moving tankmates. Create a calm, balanced community with appropriately sized neighbors and plenty of hiding spots.

Tank size

Minimum 75 gallons. Provide tall decor, driftwood, rocks, and open swimming space to accommodate its size and mid- to upper-water activity.

Diet

Omnivore; accepts quality flakes or pellets and frozen or live foods. Strong options include brine shrimp and bloodworms. Feed a varied regimen to support growth and coloration, adjusting portions to avoid overfeeding.

Compatibility

Best with larger, peaceful tankmates. Avoid tiny fish and shrimp that could be perceived as prey. Ideal for large, tranquil community tanks that emphasize structure and ample space rather than dense stocking.

Care level

Intermediate. Requires stable water parameters, a mature setup, and regular maintenance to keep the environment clean and stress-free for this sizable, active species.
