Guppy – Poecilia reticulata | Live Freshwater Fish
Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are lively, colorful freshwater fish that bring energy and color to peaceful community tanks. Ideal for beginners, they combine hardiness with a stunning spectrum of tail shapes and patterns that brighten every planted setup. Originating from Colombia and other parts of South America, these livebearers thrive in well-planted aquariums where they can weave through vegetation, chase tiny insects, and interact playfully with tankmates. Note: Some pictures are of full-grown adults and may not reflect how juveniles will look, as color intensity and tail shape often change as they mature.
Natural habitat
Guppies originate from warm, slow-moving streams and rivers in Colombia and neighboring regions. In captivity, they flourish in planted tanks with gentle filtration and steady, stable water conditions that mimic their natural environment.
Adult size
Up to about 2 inches (5 cm) in length.
Temperament
Peaceful and social, guppies are excellent community fish. They swim in groups, display lively activity, and generally ignore most non-threatening tankmates. To maintain harmony, avoid fin-nipping species and provide ample hiding spots and plant cover.
Tank size
Minimum 10 gallons for a small school, with larger setups rewarded by more dynamic coloration and reduced stress. A well-planted tank with ample swimming space helps guppies show off their full color range and tail variations.
Diet
Omnivore that thrives on a varied diet. Offer high-quality flake foods as a staple, supplemented with micro-worms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and occasional live foods. A diverse menu supports vibrant color, healthy fins, and sustainable breeding activity.
Compatibility
Best kept with other peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, and small gouramis. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping tank mates that could stress or injure guppies. Because they are schooling fish, keep them in groups of 6–8 to showcase social behavior and color variation.
Care level
Beginner-friendly. Guppies tolerate minor water parameter fluctuations, but steady maintenance and regular water changes will yield the best color and vitality. Monitor for any signs of stress, particularly after introducing new tank mates or plants.
Water parameters
pH: 6.8–7.8 • Temperature: 74–82°F (23–28°C). Maintain stable conditions and regular water changes. Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0 and manage nitrate according to tank setup to preserve color and health.
Breeding notes
Guppies are prolific livebearers with rapid breeding cycles. In a mature, well-planted tank or community setup, expect fry to appear regularly. To manage population growth, consider a dedicated breeder setup or separate rearing tank, and provide plenty of fine-leaved plants orUtility surfaces for fry to hide. Feed tiny foods like baby brine shrimp or finely ground flakes to new fry and monitor adult-fry interactions to protect youngsters from predation.
Store quarantine statement
All fish are quarantined and observed for a minimum of 7 days before entering our main system. We still recommend quarantine after purchase to ensure the health and happiness of your new guppies.
Important note on appearance: Some images show full-grown adults with vivid colors and elaborate tails. Juvenile guppies may display more muted coloration and simpler tail shapes, which will evolve as they mature.
