Natural habitat

Assorted African Mbuna originate from Lake Malawi, Africa, thriving in a rugged, rock-dominated landscape. In the wild they inhabit sunlit rocky shores with extensive crevices, caves, and territorial zones, and in your aquarium they flourish when the layout mirrors that natural environment with abundant hiding spots and well-defined territories.

Adult size

Adults typically reach 3–4 inches (7.5–10 cm), making them a bold centerpiece in mid-sized tanks without overcrowding the space.

Temperament

These mbuna are territorial to sociable in groups. In a properly arranged rock-dweller setup, they display lively interactions, dramatic color displays, and dynamic foraging as they establish and defend territories within a cohesive community.

Tank size

Plan for a 50+ gallon tank or larger. A spacious setup with ample rockwork supports natural territory dynamics, reduces stress, and promotes healthier, more colorful behavior across the group.

Diet

Omnivorous and adaptable, they thrive on premium cichlid flakes or sinking pellets, with periodic live or frozen foods to support color, vitality, and overall health.

Compatibility

Best kept in robust, rock-dweller groups within a large, well-filtered tank. Providing plenty of caves and crevices helps diffuse potential aggression and encourages natural social interactions.

Care level

Care level: Moderate. Maintain stable water conditions, consistent feeding, and a well-oxygenated, clean environment to keep the group active and colorful.

Water parameters

Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C). pH Range: 7.8–8.6. A stable, alkaline, moderately hard environment mirrors Lake Malawi conditions and supports optimal color and health.

Breeding notes

Breeding is common under the right conditions. Mouthbrooding females display distinct parental care, and observing the social dynamics of a healthyMbuna group reveals natural reproduction behaviors that hobbyists can appreciate in a properly stocked tank.

Store quarantine statement (your advantage)

All fish are quarantined and observed for a minimum of 7 days before entering our main system. We still recommend quarantine after purchase to ensure the longest, healthiestlife for your new Mbuna and existing tank mates.

Note: Some pictures depict full-grown adults, but juveniles may look different in color and size as they mature.
